Monday Events: 24-Hour Psycho, Etsy Craft Night, Silent but Deadly

events_0105.jpgA wry, comic precursor to Charlie Kaufman's Synecdoche New York, Jaques Tati's 1967 Play Time takes place on a massive, modernist set as its characters attempt and fail to make human connections amid the steel and glass of a futurist Paris. Play Time at The Walter Reade Theater.

Douglas Gordon's super-slow presentation of Psycho takes Hitchcock's suspense classic and makes it last a whole day. Of course, no one expects you to sit through the entire presentation—that might drive you crazy. 24-Hour Psycho at The Guggenheim Museum.

Why spend all night watching one humorless movie devoted to one weighty issue when you can watch PopRally's collection of slapstick shorts on several weighty issues and laugh off the consequences. PopRally's Silent but Deadly at MoMa.

Our ever-growing online obsession with the D.I.Y. e-commerce site, Etsy, grows even deeper as they offer up this craft night where acolytes can trade materials, ideas, stitch together products, and generally go craft wild. Etsy Craft Night at Etsy Labs Brooklyn.

Champagne Supernovas: 7 Sure-Fire New Year's Events to Cap Off 2008

disco-ball-amelia-bauer.jpgYou've got mere hours until the ball drops and you, being, you know, you haven't planned a goddamned thing. Well, lazybones, if you're still looking for a place to wish 2008 a happy, "peace the fuck out," and a "c'mere you," to 2009, we've got a list for you. Photograph by Amelia Bauer

If you can't laugh at the past on New Years', well then, when can you? Death by Audio presents a night of hard-fisted covers performed by bands such as Titus Andronicus, Liturgy, and others playing the parts of Black Sabbath, The Mistfits, and Weezer. Death by Audio at The Bowery Ballroom.

For those who wish to be surrounded by danceable bleeps and bloops come midnight, the electric duo of Crystal Castles should provide a lovely fix. Crystal Castles at the Music Hall of Williamsburg.

Whassup, 2009! Grandmaster Mele Mel of the Furious Five and several new-school acts with a touch of old-school style will be hipping and hopping as the ball drops. Grandmaster Mele Mel at Studio B.

The King of Cornball Cabaret Culture, New York's living treasure Murray Hill will be hosting his/her usually glorious Holiday bash, this time at the Zipper. Murray Hill's New Year's Eve Extravaganza at the Zipper.

As 2008 passes from 2009, so does Refinery29's neighbor, the venerable Knitting Factory passes into history. Tonight Deer Tick will take the stage for the venue's final show in its current digs. Go pour a 40oz. in their honor. Deer Tick at The Knitting Factory.

As you might expect, Santos' Party House is delivering an overstuffed package of heedless fun for its first New Year's bash. The Misshapes will DJ, Gang Gang Dance will rock the stage, and in-house patron saint Andrew WK will lead the countdown. It's a pricey ticket, but it comes with a big payoff. 2009 at Santos' Party House.

Enjoy, kiddos.

Martin Scorsese's No Direction Home follows the career of Bob Dylan to his famous 1965 London concert. Heady stuff. No Direction Home at Walter Reade.

Bring a lighter and a fist to bang when Earl Greyhound and, like, a hundred other bands play Santos' tonight. Earl Greyhound at Santos' Party House.

There's not a lot of nudity going around in Naked Ping Pong, but there is a lot of free booze. Naked Ping Pong at 487 Greenwich.

God willing, tomorrow will be a night-long dance party. Stretch in preparation at this weekly DJ-fest. Shit Hammered We Bite at Happy Ending.

In a similar vein, get psyched for tomorrow courtesy of Talibam! Talibam! at Cake Shop.

Monday Events: Scorsese's First, Sandra Bernhard, Patti Smith, Soulive, Nas, and Gogol Bordello

events_1229.jpgThe first, and rarely screened, feature from Martin Scorsese, Who's That Knocking at My Door has more romance and longing than the rest of the director's beatings and bullets body of work. Who's That Knocking at My Door at Walter Reade.

New York has several natural resources it can always fall back on—Tourism, Lou Reed, and Sandra Bernhard's big, fat mouth. Catch it, and her, in action at Joe's Pub. Sandra Bernhard at Joe's Pub.

Speaking of local resources, Patti Smith and her music may get older and wiser, but that young, burning lady inside her hasn't aged a day. Patti Smith and her Band at The Bowery Ballroom.

It's a little bit crunchy. It's a little bit hip-hop. Like some sort of peace-sharing initiative you can dance to, Soulive stirs up Woodstock vibes with South Bronx beats into a heady mix. Soulive at The Highline Ballroom.

On that note, of all the great rappers of the last decades, perhaps only Jay-Z, Rakim, and Nas have kept their skills and output razor sharp. Only one of them plays to night. Nas at The Hammerstein Ballroom.

It's always a hipster gypsy party when Gogol Bordello jumps on stage. Oompaa! Goglo Bordello at Webster Hall.

Monday Events: Growing, Babydoll, Yo La Tengo, and Let the Right One In

events_1222.jpgBaby Doll is Elia Kazan and Tennessee Williams' Rust-Belt noir features a revenge plot involving the seduction of a creep's 19-year-old child bride—a virtual captive in his house who has been brainwashed so far into permanent infancy that she still clings a teddy bear and sucks her thumb as the middle-aged men around her spar for her sexual favors. Did we mention this is a comedy? Baby Doll at Film Forum.

Backwards, forwards, looped, and twisted, the electronic sounds of Growing go deeper than most knob-twiddling experiments. Growing at Southpaw.

Yo La Tengo, the time-honored college-rock heroes, are still working through their multi-night "8 Nights of Hanukkah" stand at Maxwell's. Go light a candle. Yo La Tengo at Maxwell's.

The vampires of Twilight are pretty and well-spoken to be sure. But those Teen Beat creatures don't hold a candle to the dread and humor created by the young, girlish bloodsucker of Let the Right One In. Bite into this jewel at BAM. Let the Right One In at BAM.

Nostalgic tales of drug abuse set to three-chord progressions, paired with sweet, sweet vocals - ah, Evan Dando. Evan Dando at Southpaw.

One of Almodóvar's most beloved films, Talk to Her, follows two drastically different love stories: one between a nurse and a coma patient, one between a writer and a bull-fighter. The 2002 film won an Oscar for best original screen play. It's criminal not to see this. Talk to Her at Film Society of Lincoln Center.

DFA Records has Hot Chip and Hercules & Love Affair on their roster, not exactly the worst performing bands of the year. To celebrate, label co-founder and LCD Soundsystem frontman, James Murphy, is throwing a hell of a party with lots and lots of disco. Yep, disco. DFA Holiday Party at Le Poisson Rouge.

Charitable D.J.'s like Afrika Bambaataa spin to benefit the homeless at Studio B's annual Stuck on Earth food drive for City Harvest. Joy at Studio B.
