Dazed Photog's Solo Exhibit Brings Salty Eye Candy to The SoHo Grand

ruvan-exhibition-1.jpg

Shutterbug Ruvan Wijesooriya has shot for iD, Dazed & Confused, British Vogue, Nylon, and V, just to name a few rags. Now he's presenting his heady mix of sex, style, skin, and surreal realism in his first solo show in New York. The exhibit, "Since Forever is Gone," shows off his darker side—alien shots of girls in bath tubs, lone figures traipsing about melancholy cityscapes, ladies making questionable forms under bedsheets—all with an eye toward style. For a little eye candy pre-Fashion Week, check out the opening reception tomorrow night. Wednesday, 7-10PM, Soho Grand. RSVP. On display through March 31.

Fashion Talks? OK, We'll Listen — Especially If Donna Karan's Talking

donna_karan.jpgFashion Week is mere days away, but you can get an early-bird dose of style expertise—tonight, in fact, at the Alliance Francaise. Fashion Talks is a three part series in which Pamela Golbin, curator of contemporary fashion at Paris's Musée de la Mode et du Textile (which has held exhibits featuring Valentino, Rykiel, and Gaultier within the past year alone) converses with fashion industry icons. First up is Donna Karan. Her designs have long been wardrobe staples, thanks to her attentiveness to the female figure. Surely the fashion veteran will have many words of wisdom. Be sure to flip your calendar forward to March as well: mademoiselle Catherine Malandrino (March 20) and — queen of queens — Diane von Furstenberg (March 23) will also be featured. Florence Gould Hall, 55 East 59th Street; 212-307-4100; tickets via ticketmaster.

What to Do Monday: Williamsburg Spelling Bee, Lady Sovereign, Lykke Li, Kon Tiki, and

events-0202.jpgSeems Lykke Li and her sweet-and-tart Scandinavian pop breeze into town every other week. We wouldn't mind if it was every other day.

Thor Heyerdahl decided the best way to prove his spurious anthropological series was to build a raft of reeds and sail across the Pacific Ocean. We love a good Don Quixote tale. Kon Tiki at MoMa.

Have a beer or two a show off your spellin' skullz. Williamsburg Spelling Bee at Petes's Candy Store.

We brought you word of Lady Sovereign Pianos the other week. Seems for some reason the sport-model rapper had to delay her show—pop in to see her bounce of the ceiling tonight. Lady Sovereign at Pianos.

What to Do This Weekend: January 29 - 31

honeymoon-killers-events.jpgFriday:

Apparently, François Truffaut pronounced The Honeymoon Killers his favorite American movie of the year 1970. If you don't take out word for it, take his. That guy knows a thing or two. Positif editor Michel Ciment will introduce the screening. The Honeymoon Killers at Walter Reade.

A hustler story in the '70s? A dime a dozen! Except when young Al Pacino's onscreen, Joan Didion's written the script, and Jerry Schatzberg is behind the camera. The Panic in Needle Park at Film Forum.

Rag-tag gypsy punk at the Jewish center! Will the local Freida Goldbergs be in the mosh pit? This is something to see. Gogol Bordello at 92YTribeca.

One of the only guys whose show could rivals Gogol Bordello's on the nutsy scale? Dan Deacon. Mayhem to the fifth power. Dan Deacon at Danbro Brewery Warehouse.

Hey! It's Chrissie Hynde! The Pretenders at Roseland Ballroom.

Don't be fooled: there are neither robots nor zoo-kept animals onstage for this act. Apes & Androids at Music Hall of Williamsburg.

What to Do Thursday: Fashion Wars, Magnificent Obsession, Edie Sedgwick, Jeanne Dielman, and Liz Renay

pmlinks0129-1.jpgFashion: brought to you with a good soundtrack and a style-off photo competition. Inevitably, we assume David Bowie's "Fashion" tune will greet your ears at some point. Fashion Wars Live at Ultra Lounge.

An examination of a woman's life using all the old-school technical and artistic cinematic choices that film buffs relish: long takes, real-time visuals, minimal dialogue. Plus, it was made by a 25-year French film-maker for a paltry sum. What have you done lately? Jeanne Dielman at Film Forum.

In this case, Edie Sedgwick is not Warhol's former muse, be warned: it's a guy in heels and sequined dresses who sings songs about pop culture stars like Michael J. Fox. Sounds crazier than the original Edie! Edie Sedgwick at Monkey Town.

Film director Douglas Sirk says of his own film: "It is a combination of kitsch and craziness and trashiness". Well then! Magnificent Obsession at Anthology Film Archives.

If the depression that Valentine's day brings is already looming, maybe this'll help. Maybe. How to Attract Men: the Art of Liz Renay at Deitch Gallery.

Japan Fashion Week In New York Delivers a Colorful Shot of Tokyo's Best

j-fw-01-28-1.jpg

Last night, Japan Fashion Week flew into town, carrying with it 13 of Tokyo's finest designers. The runway show at the Altman Building proved to be colorful, cleverly conceptual, with just the occasional dud or two thrown in. High on our favorites list was the Stephen Sprouse-y one-piece and jacket ensemble from ato and the whole G.V.G.V collection, including a pair of high-waisted pants with exaggerated zippers that screamed Ben Cho, and a neon day-glo dress, which—though too crazy for us to wear out—set the tone for the rest of the night. Satoru Tanaka's looks for men, meanwhile, hit the more subdued side—in a good way, that is—with pristine tailoring and a simple, minimalist aesthetic.
