Runway Report: Yigal Azrouël

Long ago, Israeli designer Yigal Azrouël traded sex and glamor for beauty. His spring/summer 09 show proved it was a worthwhile sacrifice. Azrouël presented a unique take on the 60s hippie dresses that we've been seeing here and there. But don't get us wrong, in the Indian prints and flowing, voluminous dresses, there was a sharp, almost abstract motif—nothing dowdy, nothing wasted. Beautiful, if somewhat oversized caftans and gowns in peach, sea spray, citron, and a rare v-shaped high-rise short demonstrated exactly how far Azrouël has come from jersey-based streetwear.
