Another One Bites the Dust: DNR Goes the Way of All Things

dnr_folds_refinery29_1120.jpgWow. We just finished posting about the demise of Stylephile, and then we flicked over to Gawker and found out that the men's fashion industry newspaper DNR folded today. The bodies are piling high, people. The brother of WWD, DNR will be remembered for breaking news about men's designers first, parsing out the obscure language of the retail and manufacturing sectors of our industry for us math idiots, and generally keeping us in the loop. It is survived by its small cadre of readers and subscribers, analysts, and the many staffers who will soon be updating their resumes. We wish them all luck. (Gawker)

Stylephile Falls Victim to The Second Depression, We Get Misty

stylephile_refinery29_1120.jpgSad news! So sad indeed that we cannot write it ourselves. To quote our beloved Caroline Ryder of Stylephile at Variety, "Along with Wall Street, WaMu and the city of Detroit, this esteemed lifestyle blog has fallen victim to the bananas collapse of the American economy." When will it end, people? When will it end? Well, godspeed Caroline, you will be missed—at least until you return to the fashion blog fold, which, we predict, will happen very soon. (Stylephile)

The Mother (Nature) of All Collaborations: Loomstate & Target Team Up

Rogan:Target.jpgThe purveryors of all things economical and all things organic are teaming up yet again to make "natural history." That's right, Target and Gregory Rogan's Loomstate line just announced their GO International collabo, which promises to be bigger and greener than the last. Set to launch April 19th, just a day before Earth Day (how befitting), the collection is made up of separates in organic cottons and sustainable fibers like linen and silk at affordable prices. Without a doubt, this collection will bring us back to nature. (WWD)

Bag Bonanza: Coutorture's Parade of 100 Purses

bags_coutorture_1119.jpg

Why oh why did God create us with a natural attraction to bags? Not that we mind, but a need for buttery leather pouches doesn't exactly square with the principles of evolution (or our bank accounts for that matter). Well, if we can't go out and buy 100 purses, at least we can recline in our new office chairs and enjoy a cavalcade of the best Cacharel, Louis Vuitton, and Christian Dior bags sent down Paris' runways this last season courtesy of Coutorture. If we can't have the real thing, we're happy to settle for a little purse porn. (Coutorture)

Gulp! Swallow Magazine Hits the Spot

swallow_magazine_1119a.jpg

Get your mind out of the gutter. The saucy title for this new rag does not refer to any naughty acts within. In fact Swallow is a highbrow tome that's one part art, one part food with a little bit of fashion sprinkled on top. Founder James Casey took time away from his busy schedule as art director to bring together a network of hip and hungry friends to collaborate on the first issue, with emphasis on Nordic cuisine. The magazine, which is hard bound, came about after Casey, who is also elbow deep in the editorial world, felt the need to find an outlet to rant and rave about his experiences with grub, from superb to surreal. As you know, we've been feeling especially magazine-crazed lately, and Swallow seems like hearty visual meal we've been craving.

Runners Up, but Champs Still: Vena Cava Speaks About CFDA Win

vena_cava_cfda_q_and_a.jpgAs we reported, the women of Vena Cava, Sophie Buhai and Lisa Mayock, earned runner-up honors at Monday's CFDA Fund Awards, meaning they left the gala dinner with $50,000, a year's worth of business mentoring, and the keys to a new Lexus in their collective purse. The day after, they shared their experience with us—the nerves, the celebrations, the cheeseburgers…

What did you do in the hours leading up to the dinner? Were your stomachs in knots?
Sophie Buhai:Yes. I had a bad case of the jitters. I called my mom, stared at the ceiling, smoked a cigarette, and listened to the radio.
Liss Mayock: I guess I was kind of lucky that I had a full day—I had less time to be nervous. My dress had to get altered that morning though, and I didn't get it back until 5:30 and I had to leave at 6! That freaked me out a bit.

How did you feel going in, especially since you've been through this before with the Fund in '07?
SB: It's an amazing thing just to be nominated and go through the process. The industry is very supportive and to participate a second time was a privilege. It really has advanced our company in so many ways.
LM: It's true—the fashion industry gets a really bad rap as being back-stabbing and bitchy, but we've experienced the complete opposite. Being a nominee in the fund, you really get the sense that the judges are rooting for you. They really want you to succeed.

When they announced your runner-up win, how did you feel? What did you say to each other?
SB: Shock. All I could see was Harvey Weinstein's face in front of me.
LM: Total shocker here too. Everyone around me told me I looked terrified. And then to walk onstage and shake John Galliano's hand was just surreal…
