Healthy Competition: Opening Ceremony Takes On Japan

openingceremonyjapan0828.jpgSwitching their focus from the United States after a celebratory Olypmics-themed collection of goods, Opening Ceremony has turned to Japan to refresh their store's ever-expanding inventory. Pitting American designers against international ones is founders Humberto Leon and Carol Lim's specialty, and this latest endeavor could be their greatest project yet. Not only will the store's "Japan vs. USA" exhibition feature emerging Japanese designers, it will also introduce a Comme de Garçons market within the shop that will sell the label's iconic fragrances as well as their wallet and "Play" collections. Opening Ceremony will be collaborating with Sanrio (collective girly squeal) for Opening Ceremony Loves Sanrio products, and vending machines in both the New York and Los Angeles stores will dispense "kawaii" goods. For those who skip emails for handwritten letters, Postalco stationary, a staple in Japan, will be in abundance. If that wasn't enough, the stores will also be selling pieces by Nike, Converse, and other American brands that, paradoxically, are solely offered in Japan. Wherever your interests lie, you're sure to fall in love with some of these rare finds. (WWD)
