Petticoat Junction: "Lolitas" of the City

lolita.jpgYesterday, the Times covered the odd turn towards modesty that some young women are making on our streets these days. Ironically called, "Lolitas," the lasses dress in layers of concealing ruffles and floral prints, making them look more like China dolls than the titular heroine of Nabokov's novel—let's face it, even these girls know that if you actually read the darn thing, she dresses more like a Samantha Pleet model than anything else. In any case, while we can't exactly vouch for everything these young ladies wear (as you shall see) we are interested in the claimed upswing in petticoat wearing. We wonder—is it a reaction to years of uncrossed Lindsay Lohan legs, a stand against the informality of their parents generation, a return to, what are precieved as, simpler times. Mostly, we wonder where the hell someone finds a petticoat. Please mail in suggestions (NYTimes)
