Snooze Button: Will Fashion Week Put Us to Sleep?

anna_wintour.jpgAccording to the Huffington Post's darling Verena von Pfetten, Fashion Week's shows have gotten just plain ol' borin'. Bemoaning the gray sacks at Calvin Klein and the deceptively wearable, highly expensive wares on other runways, she points out the lack of fantasy and mystery, so beloved by Parisian designers, that New York shows are highly lacking. Who could contest this, when one of Karl Lagerfeld's latest shows featured a spinning carousel with supersized Chanel merchandise? A fitting counterpart to Slate's article about fashion's response to recession (more on that later), her piece puts forward the claim that if the clothes are unattainable, the least the designers could do is put on a good show for us editorial plebians. We couldn't agree more. While everyone has their own reaction to recession (Glamour' being one of panic and hysteria), a little bit of distraction via gorgeous gowns, eye-catching props, and beautiful people couldn't hurt. We can just imagine Alex Wang's models motorcycling around the runway, or Erin Fetherston's porcelain-skinned, angelic self descending from the ceiling on a bed of fiberglass clouds. It might just be the volt of espresso Pfetten and we need to make it through the week. (Huffington Post)
