Founded in 2007 by Los Angeles artist Andrea Zittel, her mobile store reinterpreted those basic frocks into wearable works of art. Using Zittel's original pattern, groups of artists made their own version of the smock, creating ever-expanding collection of altered, adorned shifts. These one-of-a-kind pieces have been hawked all over the country in a series of temporary shops.
Situated in Los Angeles' Chinatown, the latest Smockshop home brings the project full circle. Offering L.A. shoppers unique wears and a unique experience, the artistic and functional design of the smocks also gives emerging talent a chance for exposure. For three short months, Smockshop will offer up video-art presentations and performances along with the spruced-up smocks. Grab 'em while you can!
