Village Voice Lays Off Lynn Yaeger. We ask, WTF?

yaeger-main-1231.jpgLate last night Gawker reported that the Village Voice—the much-beloved local rag whose owners seem intent on starving it to death—is downsizing yet again. This time, one of our favorites was on the wrong end of a pink slip. Fashion writer, Lynn Yaeger—famous as much for her witty, influential, and brutally honest voice as she is for her orange Buster Brown hair and lipstick-dotted cheeks—is out after over 30 years of exemplary service at the paper. Nat Hentoff, hired in 1958, was a music writer for the Voice, who graduated to a civil liberties column which was very much the conscience of the publication. Guess what, in a ghastly act of self decapitation, the Voice let him go too. Of course, we're particularly bummed about Yaeger—she's been a weight bearing column in the structure of the New York fashion scene years before many of its members were born (us included). But we're sure her snarky, sassy reviews and opinion pieces will be find a better, more stable outlet soon. People like Lynn Yaeger don't fall off the map. In the end though, we have a sense that this all might have been of her own volition—you don't mess with this kinda lady. (Gawker)
