What's the Buzz? Why, National Pollinator Week!

What? You didn't know National Pollinator Week is upon us? Someone hasn't been reading the minutes of the U.S. Senate (tsk, tsk). By writ of Congress, starting this Sunday the 22nd, the whole nation will be honoring the mighty honeybee, the striped marvel of nature that pollinates a large share of America's crops. Given that we've been quite buggy today around the office, we're all abuzz (pardon us there) about celebrating an entire week dedicated to the importance of the honeybee. But there's more to it than that…

The real point of the week is to raise awareness of CCD (Colony Collapse Disorder, you dummies) a syndrome, which is mysteriously killing many of our precious bees. To help the cause, organic cosmetics company Burt's Bees will be donating 5% of the proceeds from every purchase of this special edition Beeswax Lip Balm to The North American Pollinator Protection Campaign (click here for more information). So go ahead, buy a tube, butter up those lips, and save a bee (or 100) while you're at it.



In other bee-related news, Earnest Sewn will be opening a new installation at their Meat Packing District store that should be sweet as honey (there we go again). Curated by Derrick R. Cruz, of accessories label Black Sheep & Prodigal Sons, the exhibit, A New Hive, will feature works related to CCD by Monica Byrne, Cory Gomberg, and others. As Cruz says, "The rich folklore and natural history of honeybees inspires an ethereal childlike curiosity in individuals…Curiosity leads to contemplation, internalization, and then to genuine concern." We're with you, pal.

Finally, if you really have to show your pro-bee spirit, we suggest picking up this beehive necklace (pictured above), also designed by Cruz and Black Sheep & Prodigal Sons. Now you're set for the bee-utiful week (sorry, we just can't help ourselves).
