More Monocle Merch! Monocle Opens First Shop in London

monacle_store_london_111808.jpgFresh on the heels of opening its own branded newsstand in London this summer, Monocle, the art and culture-cum-business/current affairs international magazine extraordinaire, has just launched its very own hometown store. Founder and editor-in-chief Tyler Brûlé says The Monocle Shop was inspired by readers' overwhelming response to the magazine's bespoke design, product, and lifestyle partnerships with brands like Comme des Garçons, Porter, Artek, Liberty UK, and Tretorn, to name a few. Their selection of curated, crafted products includes cozy John Smedley knitwear, stationary, candles, and the full collection of Monocle magazines. Whether you're a card-carrying member of the Eustace Tilley wannabies or not, the shop offers a rarefied feast for the culturally inclined. But of course, we expect nothing less than the crème de la crème from Brûlé.

R29 Avoids Retail Riot: Orders in Curry Instead

hm1113.jpg

That wasn't just rain that blew in with that ill wind this morning. After its launch in Japan the Comme des Garçons for H+M Collection had its long, long, long anticipated New York retail debut today. As many predicted, the lines were long and the buying was as fevered as the surrounding hype (we fully admit to being part of the media wildfire on this one). However, this morning, we looked out our window, sniffed the air, checked our closets, and said, "neh." We decided to leave decided blow-by-blow coverage of the actual crowds at H+Ms around the city was best left to far more capable, bolder, tougher journalists (God bless you, Leslie and Izzy). Perhaps it was exaggeration when someone told Vanity Fair it was, "like piranha in the water," but we prefer to keep our feet dry. We jostle with strangers enough on the subways.

Alliteration is Fun: Hayden-Harnett Halloween Happenin'

hayden1031.jpg

OK, after a certain age, trick-or-treating is considered unacceptable (see that hilarious season two episode of Curb Your Enthusiasm where Larry David is having none of it from two seventeen-year-olds on his doorstep who demand their candy). But lament not, you overgrown child: Greenpoint's own Hayden-Harnett boutique is giving you some "mature" treats. There will be wine, a 20% discount off Hayden-Harnett's signature handbags/clothing/accessories—and, every half hour between 4 to 8 pm, there will be door prizes! Take that, Larry David.

I Know What Guys Like: The Brit Shop, Heartless, Gets To the Heart of the Matter

heartless1030a.jpg

Heartless? That's a little harsh. The boys who run the eponymous high-end men's boutique, situated two hours outside of Central London, are just, well, brutally honest. They don't shy away from admitting that their target customers have cash and should blow it on the shop's wears of Yohji Yamamoto, Balenciaga, and YSL. If need be, the owners, former footballer James Brown and retail darling, Darren Rudland, will send their vintage Lambo's, Ferrari's, and VW's around to sweep you off your feet. Chauffeured to the store, you'll be met with a spread of food and drinks and a private shopping excursion within the skeleton wallpapered walls. Aww, and you thought the boys at Heartless didn't care!
