Just Opened: Them Atelier & Front St Bring Some Fresh Shop Opps to L.A.

Most Angelenos know this underpass as the entrance to the Echoplex music venue, but the Sunset/Glendale Blvd. junction is no longer reserved exclusively for rock shows. Now, you'll find a fresh trio of designers who've banded together to open a new shop housing two promising outposts: Front St and Them Atelier. David Hershberger of Endovanera discovered the Echo Park space and renovated what was said to be "an old mattress store painted like a fiesta inside." Now, the address is marked by pristine walls, which punctuate the signature tailored slacks and blazers we can't get enough of from his coveted label. It's also home to the label's lower price-point line called Nortwick. One-off pieces by local designers Scout, Himiku, and Dawn Sharp also fill the lineup. Soon after, Brian S. Kim (alum of retired denim shop Work) and wife Olga Nazarova got on board offering their latest gift to the denim world, Them Atelier—a custom and ready-to-wear workshop. The jeans are basic, minimal and elegant, but gritty enough for the likes of local eastsiders and their pockets, starting at just $75!

Just Opened: JF & Son Makes the Corner Store Cool Again With A Shiny New Boutique

jf-and-sons-fall-09-2.jpg

We've carried a torch for JF & Son since it launched just a few years ago. And with each new season, we keep falling more and more in love with designer Jesse Finkelstein's inventive textiles, body-conscious cuts, and inspired styling. In short, it's definitely a label to collect. So, happy were we to learn that the team has just opened a little NYC flagship on the corner of Kenmare and Elizabeth (is Nolita having a renaissance...again?). Here are a some snaps of our new place of worship, as well as a from fall.

A Fresh Wave of Shops Hit L.A.'s Historic Abbot Kinney Strip

Long before Jim Morrison or Dennis Hopper moved in, Abbot Kinney was a cultural landmark, and in the last decade, it has experienced a renaissance of sorts. With newly-opened art galleries, wine bars, and bookstores, the neighborhood has gone from a slum by the sea to a blossoming retail destination. Despite hard times, Abbot Kinney has held on to the heart and soul that makes it so unique. From Abbot's infamous pizza to Sunday brunch at AXE, Abbot Kinney exudes the flavor and color of its community. Here are a few of our favorite new(ish) shops along this seaside strip in Venice.

Madley, 227 Abbot Kinney Blvd.; 310-450-6029

After graduating from Rhode Island School of Design and Central St. Martins in London, Coryn Madley opened her own boutique in Venice, California. Browsing the racks of her store is a bit like rummaging through your grandmother's closet. Filled with vintage treasures and reconstructed jewelry of her own design, Madley's line reminds us of Sarah Sophie Flicker from The Citizens Band, or David Bowie with a touch of fairy dust.

Stronghold, 1625 Abbot Kinney Blvd.; 310-399-7200

stronghold-store-abbot-kinney-los-angeles.jpg

Stronghold is the oldest denim manufacturer in Los Angeles. Each pair of slacks are custom made at their shop on Abbot Kinney, and come with lifetime alterations and repairs free of charge. Their jeans are a classic combination of old world workmanship and selvage denim, with a refreshingly modern finish. In addition to their own label, The Stronghold carries other prewar companies such as Pendleton, Russell Moccasins, American Optical, and Stetson.

Just Opened! Hollander & Lexer Hits Williamsburg With a New Store and Menswear Collection

hollander-and-lexer-williamsburg-store-1.jpg

We've been fans of Hollander & Lexer ever since they set up shop a couple of years ago in Boerum Hill, hawking menswear from the likes of Rag & Bone and Robert Geller, but now the awesome men's shop is expanding with a new store, just opened in Williamsburg. Just off of Wythe Street in an aging, castle-like space with neat, uncrowded racks of clothing to browse through, the new store will offer their own menswear collection while continuing to sell our favorite men's brands. The new space's full schedule will kick in come September, but until then, summer hours are in effect: Thursday to Saturday, 12-8, and Sundays from 12-7. With so many sweet shopping options, soon there'll be no excuse for the men in our lives to not look amazing at all times.

Our Favorite Steals From the Just-Opened, Double-Decker Tribeca Housing Works

housing-works-tribeca.jpg

In the world of thrift stores, Housing Works—whose proceeds go toward the homeless—reigns supreme. No wonder, then, that the thriving Tribeca location had to move homes from 72 Warren Street to nearby 119 Chambers street, into a bigger, brighter, and much more roomy space. Though it officially opens today, we popped by yesterday afternoon to take a gander at the goods, and needless to say, we were pretty pleased. The clothes are well-laid out, easy to flip through, and organized by color. There was plenty of space to move about, and there are entire areas dedicated to men's, shoes, and home. One find we especially wanted to take home with us was the set of Rococo-style white couches ($150-$395): Beautiful. Alas, they sit there still, waiting for a friendly soul to come by and claim them as his or her own. Today could be your lucky day!
